Often we see some movie or book praised for “social statements”. Such movies and books have clear political and social message – claiming that they are trying to make society “better”. Are they? And should they?
Well, actually no, please, no – go to hell with such proposals. We’ve already reached the point where we have “left” art and “right” art. But I have no desire of watching “left” art – just give me art please.
All this stuff with social and political statements in art already let to crisis. Just look at Oscar! Firstly, it was without the host this year. Because some SJWs found old tweets of the host – and blaimed him in hate speech. Then he refused to be host. OK, nice – but it’s out of my point.
More importantly, Oscar was just ridiculous! For example, Black Panther received so much nominations! Comic movie! From Marvel! Not only technical nominations!?
Lol, Oscar, are you Okay? Marvel movies can be anything except art. They are good in money making. They are good in marketing. They are good in fooling people – they use the same story scheme all the time – and people are Ok with that. But all of these doesn’t make them art.
Art is something unusual. Something surprising. Something incorrect. When at the beginning of the movie you already know it’s ending (as we do with my friends if we go degradating on some comic movies) and you can predict every turn of the story – it’s definitely not art.
But Oscar academics with every year became more and more mainstream. They now do not award movie for it’s art value – they think more about “social meaning”.
And in this case, Black Panther is a good movie. The cast is full black, their culture represented nice – everyone is happy, especially black people. The film doesn’t have art in it though, but we can live with that, aren’t we?
The funny thing – there were some real art films this year. For example, “The house that Jack built”. Very provocative, unusual film about the man who bloody murders people and considers himself an artist. But the amount of Oscars says that Black Panther is much better movie – even though it was made just for money.
This is why I do not like that current art tries too much to be “useful”. To be social statement, to fight with discrimination, to represent cultures, blah blah blah. Authors already understand that to receive Oscar you just have to make drama about black homosexual – and you don’t have to do real art.
But real art doesn’t make social statements. It actually doesn’t make anything that you expect from it – and never tries to be comfortable. It just punches you in your face – sometimes with shiny smile, sometimes with sad face.
