Do you really want your art to be distributed only among the few thousands? To be famous only in one-two countries?
Well, I think this is not cool. If you are doing art (I’m talking only about story-art – films, books and games), you must think in wide-scale – not in the borders of one location. And well, this is exactly the reason why we see almost no art, except American, on world stage.
From it’s start America was kinda “state of the future”. They had the most progressive system (in 18 century of course) and many progressive ideas. One of them – they actually had no nations. Because America was tabula rasa for any newcomer – they started their life from the beginning – any newcomer now started to be American, not French, Deutsch, Russian, etc.
It was the first state of humans. While other states were – and still are – the states for British, Irish, Italians, etc.
Of course such ideas shaped their culture and art in particular. Their stories tried to find something that will touch every human. Something that will be actual for everyone.
And now we can see that they succeeded. Their films and games are dominating the world stage. Books are also successful. Why? Just because everyone on Earth can understand them. Either you live in Africa or in Iceland, you will understand these stories. You will feel this stories, what is more important.
You don’t have to have a special “background” for understanding. Just be human.
And you can see, that almost anything on the world stage matches this. Russian books, for example, are very popular. Because they create meanings and topics which are actual for all people on Earth.
While, for example, English comedies are not so widely distributed. I guess because the English humor can be understood only by English.
There is only one exception to all of this. Japan. Their culture is so extremely unique – it’s able to be popular in all countries. But at the same time, even they have to adapt to the world stage. Many anime stories worldwide are very different from anime in Japan. The only thing that’s being saved – style of drawing.
So, it means that if you, as a writer, want to be successful on the world stage – you have to throw away you inner borders.
