The Year of 1917. Society of Independent artists organizes the exhibition – and says that work of any artist who pays the fee will be shown at this exhibition. Anyone who pays the fee? Ok. Marcelle Duchamp, a famous art critique, sent the upside-down urinal with his sign. And somehow it was like an explosion. Art experts at the beginning of 21 century said that it was the greatest work of 20 century. What? How it happened?
Duchamp himself considered this work only as a trolling. He wanted to troll the avant-garde and at the same time troll the classic art. But other people somehow saw in this urinal something greater than just trolling. Why famous art experts thought like that? Well, they saw in this…work the question about art meaning. What makes art? Is it people’s eye? Or the artist will? This urinal even created another way in art – ready-made.
In fact, we used to think about art very straight. It should give straight meaning and be aesthetical. But what if an artist wants to break the rules? Or trick you? There was a way in art – dadaism – who purposefully went away from aesthetics. They purposefully did something that won’t be beautiful and give aesthetic enjoyment. And the meaning is also very relative. Many avant-garde artworks cannot be understood without background knowledge. But should it work like that? Classical art meaning was included in the artwork. You didn’t need to check Wikipedia to understand it.
This question doesn’t have the answer, in fact, because everyone understands art differently. And I think, that only one thing is important – emotions. This urinal can be considered as art – because when the person cames into the museum and sees…urinal, he will definitely be surprised. Maybe he will even laugh at these stupid artists and all this degradation! And this is the most important – art gives the experience, the emotions – other things are not important.
