Don’t you think that we already created an utopia? It is Internet!
Once it was a place where no one was bounded by rules and regulations. Where no one was responsible for his opinion. Where every man or woman were able to do whatever they wanted to. It was a wonderful times, aren’t they? And they still hadn’t gone yet. But we are extremely close to lose everything. And remember my words – without internet we will never be free – especially in authoritarian countries like Russia or Kazakhstan.
Why i’m writing this? Well, just look here! Russian government wants to control the internet. They want to isolate it from the world, block everything that doesn’t fit their views – and copy China’s internet model. They are afraid. This old soviet nomenclature is afraid of the technologies, afraid of youth activism and their desire to change the country for good, afraid that they can lose power.
But before their interference runet was one of the most developed and free places in all internet. Do you know that russian language is on second place (in terms of content) after english? This is not because of this old and outdated government. It’s not their merit that russian internet-companies can be as good as world ones (for example Vkontakte is not as popular as Facebook – but it’s much better in design and comfort).
This is the classical situation in CIS – where comes government, it lefts just death and decay – and spheres without government interference are developing rapidly. It shows how much potential we, CIS people, have – and how this old people on top are stopping us.
They even try to trick us. Trick by the trolls – who sit and write government-supporting comments!
So guys, do not seek for the utopia. We already created utopia! Look at internet in Russia or Kazakhstan! We have great companies – from Yandex to Chocolife. We have dozens of content. And we once had freedom. But the image boards, such as 2ch, are now controlled and moderated. Vkontakte was taken away from libertarian Durov – and now gives data to special services. Telegram is attacked by the government. Even though its not over yet.
But if Russian authorities will lock the internet – it’s only a matter of time when Kazakhstan will do the same – because our dictators are copying each other. And then we will lose everything – especially freedom. So do not seek for imaginary utopias. Just try not to lose the real one.
