We live in an age when art surrounds us everywhere. Sometimes it even appears that the quality of art is falling – but of course, it’s a mistake. We see only the best from past centuries – and we see everything of ours.
Everyone now who have access to the internet can share his creations. They may be trash – and this is very unfortunate – but the real artists also have much easier access to the audience. And everything because of new media. In the past, to share, for example, the book, you had to print it – print it in a few hundred copies at least and then share it. Pretty hard process, isn’t it?
Now you need only to print it once on the computer – and you can make as many copies as you want. And you also can share it – share it on several sites, social networks and services, without almost any censorship. This is the best conditions for every author – and even if the disadvantages of that are “Fifty Shades”, “Twilight” or another graphomania – it still worth it! Of course, the visual artists feel themselves even better. They can share their art directly to the public – and get immediate feedback.
But, more importantly, the new media give us a chance to get rid of copyright dictatorship – and of greedy companies-brokers. The first one is easily beaten by idealists – those who believe in free access to information – and create hubs with science and culture materials. The good example – Sci-hub. Its creator cannot go anywhere from Russia – she will be immediately caught by the police. But her service makes lives of dozens scientists all over the world much easier. Because the science mustn’t belong to someone – it belongs to humanity.
But more importantly, the authors themselves start to understand that the copyright is not in their interest. Copyright is needed for big companies – for example, book publishers. They take the art – book – and took away 80% of the money from author. More importantly, they make money even on dead people! Why I should pay for Tolstoy book? He is dead – he cannot take the money! Why the company or his children should get the money? It’s not their art – they did nothing! And many authors start to understand that. They share their art free – and in exchange ask for the voluntary donation. More importantly, it works! The people donate them – as much as they can afford – and this money can be huge. Look at Patreon donations of many YouTubers or designers!
The new media shaped the art – it created a chance for everyone to share their works – and it also gave them many opportunities to get paid for their work.
